Type 2 Connector (IEC 62196 Standard)
As the mandated EV charging interface throughout the European Union since 2017, the Type 2 connector utilizes a 7-pin configuration engineered for both single-phase (16A/3.7kW) and three-phase (63A/43kW) AC power delivery. This architecture delivers three core operational advantages:

Type 2 and CCS2 Interface Compatibility Details
CCS2 (Combined Charging System Type 2) is an expanded standard based on Type 2, which adds two high-voltage DC contacts (DC+/DC-) underneath the original 7-pin structure (L1/L2/L3/N/PE/CP/PP), realizing a composite interface design of AC+DC in one.
In terms of physical structure, ordinary Type 2 plugs can be inserted into CCS2 vehicle ports to realize AC AC charging; however, the CCS2 charging gun cannot be inserted into vehicle ports that only support Type 2 due to the prominent DC contacts.
In terms of communication protocols, CCS2 vehicles can directly support IEC 61851 PWM signals for AC charging through the Type 2 portion; and when performing DC fast charging, it will activate ISO 15118 standard PLC communication, which transmits higher power. This means:
- CCS2 models support AC+DC dual charging
- Type 2 older models need adapter devices if they want to support DC fast charging
So we can say that CCS2 is an upgraded superset of Type 2, which retains compatibility with traditional AC piles and expands the possibility of higher power fast charging in the future. Because of this, by 2025, more than 98% of newly launched electric vehicles in Europe will be equipped with CCS2 interface as standard.
